Planning application database
The application forms, plans and other documents submitted with the proposals can be viewed via the planning application database - Tesco planning application (B/08/00311).
The "Statutory Expiry Date for Decision" that appears on the Tesco planning application page defaults to 13 weeks, from the day the application was received, which is the time allowed by statute for a decision to be made on the application. This date is subject to change and is not an undertaking given by the council that a decision will be made on that date.
Updates/News (most recent first):
July 2011
The additional meeting of Babergh’s Development Committee on Wednesday July 6 voted against the building of a supermarket on the Brett Works site by seven votes to eight. In summary the development was considered to be inappropriate in terms of design, appearance and the use of materials.
The associated applications relating to Bridge House and the brick wall running up to Iron Bridge were approved.

There will be an additional meeting of Babergh’s Development Committee on Wednesday July 6th to consider the applications to build a superstore in Hadleigh. The meeting will start at 9.30am and will be held at the Grand Hall in Hadleigh. The Old Town Hall has also been booked as an overflow room (standing only).
Please note that the speaking arrangements resolved by the Development Committee on 17th March 2010 will still apply and are as follows:
The Director of Corporate Services reported that, under the Council’s policy for public speaking on planning applications, there is provision for only one representative from each group to speak, save in exceptional circumstances.
Due to the public interest in the application for the construction of a new food store to the rear of 75-133 High Street, Hadleigh and associated applications for Listed Building and Conservation Area consent for the demolition of buildings and structures, Officers had discussed with the Chairman the arrangements for public speaking when this item is considered by the Development Committee.
(1) That the time limit for speeches from the Applicant (or their representative) and the representative of Hadleigh Town Council be extended from 3 minutes to 5 minutes.
(2) That up to three representatives opposing the development be entitled to speak for 3 minutes each.
(3) That up to three representatives supporting the development be entitled to speak for 3 minutes each.
(4) That it be noted that potential speakers as referred to in resolutions (2) and (3) above will be made aware that in the event that more than the specified numbers wish to speak, they will be asked to agree on the three representatives in each case, failing which no representations can be made.
March 2011
The proposals are still under consideration and are likely to be presented to the Development Committee in late spring.
July 2010
The Tesco applications were due to be presented to the Development Committee on 14th July 2010 but Babergh has had to postpone its consideration for a superstore in Hadleigh to a date sometime later this year - with September being the earliest.
This has been made necessary due to the need to consider legal advice regarding the assessment of environmental issues before an application can be considered by councillors. We apologise for any inconvenience such a delay may cause, but we will ensure that all interested parties are informed as early as possible once a new committee date has been set.
January 2010
Further informations and revised plans received which provide for:
- A reduction in the size of the food store to 2,500 sq metres
- A reduction in the size of the car park
- Additional landscaping and tree planting
- A reduction in the amount of artificial lighting
- The construction of a new building to replace Bridge House
- The updating of ecological reports
These revisions are currently being considered prior to the application being presented to the Development Committee later this year.
February 2009
The determination of the planning application has been delayed as discussions continue with the applicants. This webpage will be updated if any further information is received.

In addition the Landscape and Visual Assessment originally submitted with the application has been updated and a Townscape Appraisal has been produced. The applicants have also submitted further ecological survey information and a proposed mitigation strategy.
If you would like to make any additional comments you are welcome to do so in writing within the next 28 days. Any comments we receive will be made available for anyone to read and they cannot be treated as confidential. They may also be copied if the application is the subject of an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate.
If you decide to write to us we will not be able to acknowledge your comments or provide you with a detailed reply. We will, however, take your comments and any previously made into account when the application is determined and let you know whether it has been approved or refused.
