Local Lads visit Semer Air Rifle Club

(Article from T Sanger, Hadleigh Community News November 2010)

Be Active and the new partnership with Semer Air Rifle Club looks very promising.  On Tuesday 21st September Peter Swinney (BDC Estate Ranger) and Stephanie Lloyd (BDC CDO) brought over two Be Active youngsters to the club - not an opportunity they would normally have been able to have but the Semer Air Rifle club were able to offer the youngsters a chance to take part in target shooting a safe, structured and friendly environment and the chance to be educated in the safe use of airguns.  The youngsters learned the laws regarding airgun usage and the safe handling of the airguns - they were then able to receive tuition ion the outdoor and then indoor shooting range. Be Active hope to make these visits more regular and also involve the club in some outreach sessions.

The club runs every Tuesday 7.30 pm at Semer village Hall,

Babergh Connect  (from EADT - 21/10/10 -)

A weekend of action saw agencies meet around 4000 people in their efforts to gain a better understanding of communities and the issues that matter to them.

Be Active and 'The Hub' took part in the county wide police initiative 'Babergh connect'   A range of activates took place under the Babergh connect initiative from community speed watch events to truancy sweeps, and began with the Market Hill in Sudbury being transformed into a street soccer and live music venue.

The Hub - a regular activity run by Babergh District Councils Be Active service - relocated from Sudbury Upper School Sports and Arts centre to the town centre, offering teenagers the chance to test their skills in a street soccer cage.

Youngsters were judged by two national skills coachs, while Justin Carter from Amplifier, was on hand to give visitors the opportunity to have a go at DJing.

Trialists included Chief Constable Simon Ash, Pc Barry Simpson and Suffolk Police Authority Chairman Colin Spence.

Babergh District Councils community development officer Stephanie Lloyd said 'Our Be Active Service , together with The Hub are committed to creating opportunities like this for young people to come along and try and then stay involved in.  'It is all about catching their interest and maintaining it'.

The weekend also included crime reduction visits, multi - agency vehicle checks and the execution of several warrants.

Babergh SNT Inspector Paul Crick said 'I am delighted that we managed to speak to so many people across the district. ' We will now respond to any issues that have been identified and continue to engage with communities at times and location to suit them;.
