Graffiti

Summary

Graffiti is the term for drawings, patterns, scribbles, messages or tags that are painted, written or carved on walls and other surfaces –this normally takes place in public areas where the ‘work ‘ will get maximum exposure.

Graffiti

Graffiti is very expensive to remove, especially if it is etched in, and it increases people’s fear of crime. Graffiti is illegal and is classed as criminal damage – it is an arrestable offence, which carries a maximum fine of £25,000 and up to 10 years in prison. For minor incidents an £80 on the spot fixed penalty notice may be issued.

Unfortunately, the responsibility for removing graffiti falls to the owner of the land or object which the graffiti has taken place on – the council can issue a defacement removal notice to require owners of land to remove graffiti from their property.

If you see anyone doing graffiti, call the police so that they can be caught in the act – The police often have extensive knowledge of local tags (special signatures used by graffiti artists) to identify the culprits. It is also a good idea to note down a description of the person/people involved, as well as the registration number of any vehicle they are using.
